Ingersoll Lockwood, Vanity Is the Soil — Apparel
Vanity is the soil that rulers spring from.
An engraved portrait plate of Ingersoll Lockwood, 1841 to 1918, an American lawyer, diplomat and author, set over his own sentence: “Vanity is the soil that rulers spring from, as the mushrooms spring from the rich loam of our dark caverns. They pretend that it is the exercise of power that they are so fond of. Believe them not.” The line is spoken by the Wise Man of the Underground World in Baron Trump’s Marvellous Underground Journey, published by Lee and Shepard of Boston in 1893. Lockwood died in 1918 and his writing is in the public domain in the United States. Original engraved artwork, set by hand in the house serif.
